"One of the most entertaining, original, and enlightening memoirs I have ever read. I couldn't stop reading until I finished it."

Naomi Mauer "The Jewish Press"

"As a former NBC producer, I developed an eye and ear for good stories. I recommend From the Heavens to the Heart to everyone, Jew or Gentile, who seeks a glimpse of meaningful lives of faith and happiness."

Molly Resnick

My Story

I was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1954. One hundred years earlier, in 1855, my great-grandfather came off the boat in the port of Charleston, and the local people of color affectionately called him “Jew Jacobs.”

As a child, I studied at a Jewish school, the Charleston Hebrew Institute, until my bar mitzvah. Afterwards, I assimilated at the local public high school where I was known by secular name, "Herbie." Later, I studied at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where I learned the dubious freedoms of a secular lifestyle.

After facing post-Viet Nam, post-free spirit realism, I returned to school and eventually earned a master’s degree in Epidemiology at the University of South Carolina School of Public Health. There a fellow student influenced me to return to my Jewish roots and attend a beginner’s yeshiva at the Rabbinical College of America, in Morristown, New Jersey. A few years later, I married and, thank God, we have been blessed with eight beautiful children and some grandchildren, too.

Thousands of people have bought copies of From the Heavens to the Heart. Thank God, I have a job working as a medical writer in quarantine and no longer need to sell copies of my books to pay for shoes for our children. So you may download this revised Corona-version as my gift to you. I hope this book help you get through these trying times with a smile on your face, laughter in your heart, and happy thoughts in your head.

Wishing good health and happiness,
